Luciano’s dream
Update of August 2022 – A journey that speaks of escape, friendship and the search for a new family: all this is the comic drawn by the children of Casa Esperança in Katembe in Mozambique
This comic talks about the adventure of little Luciano who, running away from home, finds himself on a journey in search of what he wants: a new family.
The creators of this story live in an infant school in Catembe, a town beyond the bridge of Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. The road to get there is not asphalted, it is made of reddish sand with lots of holes, which fill with water when it rains. It is a long road that crosses expanses of green, between the sea and the fields and when you travel along it on the buses (which in Mozambique are called chapa or machimbombo or gogongo) you can’t stay sitting, you jump up and down.
The children who live here come from the streets: minors who live without a fixed abode are a huge problem in Mozambique. They are those who sometimes escape from those who mistreat them, or get lost, or have been sold or sent by their parents to the Mozambican capital in the hope of finding a job, even if they are premature.
The kindergarten are reception centers where the children find a bed and a bathroom and for a short period they live there, until they return to their families or become adults. The situations that these children and young people can experience inside the Mozambican kindergarten are unknown even to the Mozambicans themselves, they are little people who remain invisible and who only some see.
Together with Alice, a Civil Service volunteer from another organization, PASSI Società Cooperativa, and Angela, also a Civil Service volunteer but from AGAPE in 2022, this comic is created that talks about adventure, friendship and family.
The comic, once completed, was used in a stop motion workshop that took place both in Maputo, at the Nucléo De Arte gallery with the kids from the Catembe center, and in Italy with the SinergEtica Cultural Association during the “Cine- ma Corto” short film festival in Moniga Del Garda, a collateral event of the Desenzano Film Festival. During the same festival, which takes place in October, the work was printed and presented to the public by Alice and Angela, who talked about their experience in Maputo.
