ABOUT US

AGAPE MOZAMBIQUE

We believe that each person is endowed from birth with a potential that represents his/her uniqueness and has the right and the duty to bring it out, to express it and to use it to be the author of his/her own choices. We fight against indifference to misery, suffering and inequality because we think that each person must and can contribute to build a reality in which each individual is the architect of his or her own future.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Since 1990, even before AGAPE was born, a group of our volunteers had already started to realise, together with other associations, projects all over the world. These included schools, homes, workshops, dispensaries for lepers, and others. However, the desire to help children around the world, not only by building homes and schools, but also by offering sustenance and caring, became ever stronger. Thus, in 1992, thanks to a small group of volunteers, the first forms of aid began to be created and materialised in long-distance adoptions, but they did not stop there: strengthened by the skills and knowledge they had acquired, in 1996 this group of volunteers decided to found the AGAPE association.

Over the years, our humanitarian aid activities have become increasingly numerous and in 2009 we were present in 15 countries with AGAPE. Currently, our efforts are concentrated in two large areas of the African continent (Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique) where AGAPE is legally recognised, but also in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ecuador and India.

AGAPE

VISION

We conceive the World as one big family based on the values of sharing, trust in others and reciprocity

VALUES

Human dignity, Respect and Responsibility

In Mozambique

AGAPE’s involvement in Mozambique began in 2000. At that time, we were working with the Scalabrinian Sisters in Brazil, when we heard of a small mission run by their congregation in Ressano Garcia (Mozambique) on the border with South Africa. The trust gained over the years, by working alongside them, led us to make a first inspection: we came across a frontier reality, a small mission of nuns with major difficulties.

Over the years, we have become increasingly aware of the reality and difficulties of this great country, particularly in the city of Maputo and the surrounding provinces (Gaza and Inhambane). This led AGAPE, in 2018, to formally register in the territory. Today, all projects in which AGAPE Moçambique is involved or which it directly develops, include a multidisciplinary training component that aims to empower local partners (both public and private), and communities so that they can independently improve their living conditions and bring lasting change to the country. This means that in Mozambique, the association operates at different levels and in areas that are also very far apart, but with a single objective: to create a sustainable economic, social and environmental development.
