A “center” for the children of Maputo
Update of June 2023 – The Hlayiseka centers in Maputo are responsible for welcoming street children who do not have a family every day. Their precarious situation puts, especially the girls, at risk
Hlayiseka is a Mozambican non-profit organization that has been developing various social activities in the Maputo area for many years, all aimed at making the lives of street children safer and less difficult.
The headquarters of the association, which is also the main center where the activities take place, is located in the Alto Maé neighborhood, in the center of the city of Maputo. Here there is a work group that includes a coordinator, an educator and some general service workers such as a guard and the kitchen staff who prepare meals for the children every day. In addition to this first location, the organization has two other facilities in the more peripheral neighborhoods of the city, Laulane and Kongolote, which are activated when there are enough volunteers to carry out the activities continuously. In fact, AGAPE volunteers are not the only ones who work closely with the organization: other associations also support the centers by making volunteers available.
The center is open, so children who are found on the streets and brought to the facilities are not obliged to stay or sleep in the center, but are free to leave and return whenever they want. Hlayiseka has a small courtyard where children have fun, a classroom where children receive scholastic support, starting with literacy, and some rooms to host children. The work carried out at Hlayiseka is characterized by extreme collaboration and cooperation both between colleagues and volunteers, who fit into a context that puts children and young people first.
Contact with the children occurs in a friendly way, without exerting pressure or showing obligations, but rather by raising awareness of the importance of being in a home, around a family, and the importance of access to education. When the children arrive at the Center, data is collected on their family and health status so that their story can be followed as continuously as possible.
