Studying to build the future

Update of Agosto 2022 – The Scholarships Project is moving forward thanks to many donors: every year, we manage to enroll one or two more kids in university or a professional course. David is one of these.

David is 27 years old, he is a Mozambican boy who despite his young age already has a past full of experiences, training and work. His father died when he was very young and, being an only child, he had to take care of his mother since adolescence. His is a very humble family from the province of Maputo, he comes from Manhiça, a town an hour and a half from the capital.

Despite the many difficulties, he almost managed to complete all of high school, which is unusual in a country where kids have to go to work early to support their families. Unfortunately, due to some family problems, he had to leave 3 subjects before graduating. But he didn’t get discouraged and started working right away: his great passion was children and he started to be an activist for humanitarian organizations that worked with children in his city. Working in large organizations, he had the opportunity to take many training and refresher courses, until he himself became a trainer for younger kids.

AGAPE met him by chance, while he was supporting the work of another organization as a mediator between operators and families. From the very beginning, we were struck by his incredible seriousness, as well as his past, already full of experiences and difficulties, overcome thanks to his skill and determination. For this reason, we proposed to help him finally get that qualification that could make him a professional in all respects. Incredibly, he was very undecided: he knew he had to support his mother and a newborn daughter, and he was afraid that his studies wouldn’t allow him to work enough. Furthermore, he could not go directly to university because he had to finish his high school exams, so he would have had to divide his time between many things and he did not want to disappoint those who were giving him such an opportunity.

Luckily, in the end we managed to find a solution! Today he studies early childhood education, which is a vocational school that will allow him to work in daycare centers with a degree and to earn enough to pay for university, possibly at a later time.
